On Nov. 25, 2008, Nanjing Shuangwei Biotechnology Co., Ltd. launched its first Working Skills Contest. The contest ran for eight days, concluding on Dec. 3, 2008, with 70 staff from Production Department 1, Production Department 2 and the QC Department taking part.

In the end, four workers were awarded the title of “Skill Expert”, 12 took second place and 13 took third place. Beyond testing technical ability, the contest energised the participants and gave the company a structured way to identify outstanding technicians and operators. It received strong attention from senior management and broad support from staff. In the run-up, company leaders carried out a thorough internal campaign and the three participating departments prepared in detail.

Judging rules were tailored to each role. Operators were assessed mainly on technique and final yield; inspectors on the consistency of their procedures and the stability of their measurements — a structure designed to keep the contest fair across functions.

Competition among the production departments was intense. Participants concentrated fully on operating speed and finished-product quality. In the end, Xiehui, from the assembly division, took first place: she assembled 50 filters in 35 minutes with a 100% yield. Other participants also demonstrated strong skills.

The QC competition proceeded in an orderly manner. The task was to perform full inspection procedures. Drawing on years of experience and careful preparation, all participants completed sample preparation and titration calmly and confidently. After a six-hour session, judges scored each participant on the spot based on inspection results and announced the top three.

On Dec. 3, Shuangwei held a grand award ceremony. Mr. Xiao Guangfeng, manager of Shuangwei, praised the contest and the winners. He noted that the event not only tested staff capabilities but also revealed their working potential, and announced that Shuangwei will hold this kind of contest every year to lift technical skills and motivate staff. The ceremony concluded with the presentation of certificates to the winners.

Throughout the competition, participants learned from one another, demonstrated their techniques and gained new knowledge from peers and judges. Events of this kind give every member of staff a platform on which to develop and aspire to become a Skill Expert, and help build a constructive, collaborative working culture.
