How to Apply & Remove Orthopedic Casting Tapes

January 18, 2010

Correct technique is essential to get the best results from orthopedic fiberglass casting tape. This guide summarizes the standard application steps, bandaging methods and removal procedure.

Application Steps

  1. Wind a protective pad onto the bone-wound part first.
  2. Open the package wearing gloves. Immerse the casting tape in room-temperature water for 5–8 seconds, then squeeze out excess water.
  3. Wind the casting tape onto the protective pad layer by layer, overlapping half the width of each previous layer.
  4. Press gently for intimate contact and proper shaping. The cast hardens and sets in about 5–7 minutes.

Bandaging Methods

Loop method: used for the wrist and body parts of even thickness. Overlap the tape like a loop — the first lap slightly oblique, the second and third circular — pressing the corner of the oblique first lap into the circle, then fix the end.

Important Notes

  • The wrap should be neither too tight nor too loose. Too tight impairs blood circulation; too loose fails to fix the dressing. If unsure, check whether the far part of the limb becomes cold or swollen after bandaging.
  • Do not knot over the wound or at the back of the body, to avoid discomfort while sleeping.
  • In an emergency without casting tape, towels or handkerchiefs may be used for temporary first aid.

Cast Removal

A hardened fiberglass cast is removed by cutting with an electric plaster (cast) saw.
