Fiberglass Casting Tape Technology, Materials & Manufacturing

February 20, 2010

Modern orthopedic fiberglass casting tape is the product of decades of materials research. This article reviews the core technologies behind ravel-free, light-weight, resin-coated fiberglass casting tapes.

Knitted, Ravel-Free Fiberglass Substrate

High-performance casting tape uses an all-fiberglass substrate that does not fray or ravel yet offers a very high degree of extensibility. The fabric is knitted with an elastic fiber in the length direction, which compacts the fabric when it leaves the knitting machine. The elastic fiber is then removed by a heat treatment that heat-sets the fabric in a contracted configuration with little or no fraying or raveling — giving the tape its characteristic stretch and clean edges.

Moisture-Curable Resin System

The substrate is coated with a curable polyurethane resin formed from a polyisocyanate compound and a reactive hydrogen compound. When immersed in water, the resin cures rapidly to a rigid, durable cast. Fillers incorporated into the casting material add considerably to the cured strength and improve the handling properties of the uncured tape, while also imparting air and vapor porosity to the finished cast.

Light-Weight Construction

To make the device easier to use, manufacturers coat the composite resin mixture onto a light-weight scrim while the components are only partially reacted and viscosity is still low, allowing the mixture to spread evenly. Further reaction then forms a strong, light, water-resistant cast.

Key Performance Features

  • Safety & comfort: low post-drying contraction, no tight or itchy feeling.
  • Strength: ~20× the intensity of an ordinary plaster bandage; impact resistance ≥ 12 KJ/m².
  • X-ray penetrability: no need to remove the cast for imaging.
  • Water resistance & breathability: firm, light and porous to air and vapor.
